Jesus made it the best Super Bowl ever, just by showing up.
Many of the players on the Sacramento Japs were aggressively open about their faith, as were their
opponents, the Mississippi Spearchuckers. The quarterback of the Japs, Trey Rockjaw, knelt in prayer on the sidelines while his team's defense was on the field. Breaking the huddle before every play, he signed himself with a movement that looked vaguely Catholic, except for the part where he combined a motion of passing with a flourishing index finger pointed to the heavens.
"That last part I made up, to symbolize that every pass is for the glory of my Savior, Jesus Christ, who saved me and watches all my games," he explained on Media Day.
The game itself was exciting enough for most fans. The Japs edged the Spearchuckers on a last-minute drive, culminating in a scramble by Rockjaw, who dove across the goal line just as time expired. With so many born again Christians on both teams, there were no hard feelings, of course, only joy in the Lord, who surprised the worldwide television audience by suddenly appearing next to the stunned quarterback during a postgame interview.
