     She had given her heart away so he could grow and thrive in a happy, healthy place. She'd given up a lifetime of adoring son-smiles to a couple who was desperate to have a family. She'd given up toothless grins and first words so he would never know what it was to go to bed with an aching hollow in his belly.
     "All I want to do is see him graduate. That's all," she whispered to herself. She'd listen carefully for his name and follow him with her eyes across the stage.
     Unexpectedly, his name rang out. But it was too early! They hadn't even started giving out diplomas yet. A tall, confident young man ascended the steps. Her son was the valedictorian. She clung to the fence, suddenly feeling lightheaded.
     She'd missed everything so that he'd miss nothing. Tears welled in her eyes.
